Episode 19: Senate House 1

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Senate House in Bloomsbury, Britain's oldest skyscraper and administrative centre of the University of London. Items under valuation include the hoof of a horse that fought in the Battle of Balaclava, a collection of stained glass panels that were recovered from a skip, and a diamond and platinum bracelet.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Antiques Roadshow reactions are legendary: a gasp, blinks of disbelief and eyebrows shooting up are all quite normal. But the experts witness some especially wonderful responses when they visit the art deco splendour of the University of London’s Senate House.

The valuation of six Pre-Raphaelite stained-glass panels found in a skip elicits a “Sweet as a nut!” from their owner. A miniature cigarette holder gets a very big “Ooooooh!” But it’s a stunning platinum and diamond bracelet described by an excited Geoffrey Munn as “marvellously slinky malinky” – probably a technical term - that gets such an emotional reaction it brings a tear to everyone’s eye.
