Episode 14: Burton Constable 2

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Burton Constable Hall near Hull, where historic items brought in to be valued include a series of letters written by Florence Nightingale, the diaries of an SS officer held as a prisoner of war in Britain, the first ever piece of transatlantic air mail, and a collection of 1500 shoe buckles.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Bake Off fans will spot a familiar face amongst the crowds at Burton Constable Hall near Hull. Nancy Birtwhistle, the 2014 winner, brings her glass cake stand trophy in – presumably for a laugh rather than a valuation.

The treasures on show include letters from Florence Nightingale, a brooch in the shape of a butterfly or a moth (it’s worth more if it’s a butterfly), a gold medal awarded to a ship’s cook for an act of bravery at sea and a bronze figure bought for a small sum plus a few fish and chip suppers. Among the oddities are a tiny china toilet, a saucy Victorian ornament and a collection of shoe buckles.
