Episode 15: Burton Constable 1

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Burton Constable Hall near Hull, which is home to a collection of treasures. Objects brought in to be valued include a ship's anchor that was found in a garden pond, a medal awarded to sailor for helping to recover Captain Scott's ship from the Antarctic in 1901, some 17th-century flat pack furniture, and a flimsy booklet that proved to be a profitable investment.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Antiques Roadshow is always an education. Even fairly nerdy lovers of brass instruments might not have heard of a precursor to the tuba known as the ophicleide – a name that sounds like a Lewis Carroll monster.

A trombonist from the Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band brings one in that dates from the mid-19th century and it looks more like a weapon of war than a musical instrument, and not in great nick. But according to valuer Adam Schoon, it’s worth comfortably more than scrap value.

We’re in the sunlit gardens of Burton Constable Hall, near Hull, and a man who paid 75p for an oil sketch at a car boot sale also gets a nice surprise.
