Episode 10: Golden Age of Travel Special

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents a special episode from on board the Flying Scotsman during its journey across Cumbria and Yorkshire, with passengers sharing family stories from the early history of long-distance travel. Artefacts brought on board to be valued include a porthole from the wreck of ocean liner RMS Lusitania, designer cutlery from Concorde, and an iron bar that was once part of the famous train.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Unabashed nostalgia all the way, as the Antiques Roadshow relives the golden age of travel. Fiona Bruce and selected experts climb aboard a train pulled by the Flying Scotsman, no less, where they’re joined by viewers with some fabulous air, rail and sea memorabilia.

“It’s like holding the relic of a true saint,” says Paul Atterbury as he holds the Scotsman’s original smokebox number plate – to most of us a sign with “60103” on, but to enthusiasts it’s a five-figure number that’s worth five figures.

More obviously beautiful are the vintage railway posters and an extraordinary array of stewardess uniforms from early airlines; collector Mark has 133 of them.
