Episode 8: Baddesley Clinton 1

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Baddesley Clinton, a moated manor house near Birmingham. Items brought in to be valued include a diamond bracelet once worn by Rita Hayworth, a wooden peg that was removed from a child's eye in the 1870s, a painting by Lord Mountbatten of his family home and a controversial carving of St George that offended a church's parishioners. One visitor brings in a rare wooden pedestal, and is chastised by one of the Roadshow experts for stripping it of the original paintwork.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

There have been many occasions when an Antiques Roadshow expert has berated a member of the public for not looking after their treasured object properly. So one visitor to Baddesley Clinton immediately confesses to Christopher Payne that she once had her carved wooden pillar stripped of its original paint. Payne nearly faints at the thought.

There are both exquisite and macabre items this week: some fabulous jewellery, a charming travelling tea set and a silver box containing a wooden peg removed from a child’s eye by a 16th-century surgeon. Plus – what are the chances? – a pocket globe similar to the one brought in to Broughton Castle in the last episode.
