Paralympics 2016: Opening Ceremony Live

Clare Balding and Adam Hills present coverage from the Maracana in Rio, as the Games are officially declared open and the athletes enter the stadium for the opening ceremony. A carnival atmosphere is expected inside the arena, and an all-star line-up of guests join Clare and Adam to preview the 11-day spectacular and take a closer look at ParalympicsGB's potential medal prospects. The likes of established stars Ellie Simmonds, Hannah Cockroft, Jonnie Peacock, David Weir and Sarah Storey are all expected to bring home gold, as they did so famously on home soil four years ago, while new superstars could also emerge over the course of the next week and a half of action. With commentary by Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Rob Walker.

Empty stadiums. Banned athletes. A backward step? It’s easy to be suspicious of how Rio 2016 will take to the Paralympics. But here in the UK we have a secret weapon to combat the cynicism: Channel 4.

Quite frankly, there aren’t many broadcasters in the world that would devote up to 19 hours a day to covering the Games, let alone do it with such cheek and character.

Clare Balding leads the line again, with a supporting cast including former sitting volleyball captain Martine Wright. Eleven years ago she lost both legs in the London 7/7 bombings, and if you had an ounce of doubt about the Paralympics, then listen to her.

“London 2012 for me proved that I was involved in that attack for a reason,” she told RT. “The first ever international I went to was on 7th July. Seven years after 7/7 I was in front of 70,000 people as a Paralympian. I believe seven is my lucky number now.”
