Episode 1: Fly Fishing

Summary

Comedy following evergreen pensioners Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade as they cope with everything that modern life throws at them. Boabby has ambitious new ideas for the pub and it seems the regulars do not figure in his plans, prompting them to take matters into their own hands. Meanwhile, Winston is forced to move out of his flat for a while, but no one is keen to take him in, and Isa is on a mission to find out who is throwing her a surprise birthday party. Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill star.

Review

The Glasgow codgers return with a nicely turned episode, opening in a pleasant idyll: Boabby’s no-frills pub The Clansman is full of Jack, Victor and their mates barely touching their pints, as they play dominoes and Boabby worries about going bankrupt. All is well, apart from Winston being homeless due to a snag with asbestos. Then, calamity as Boabby tried to increase takings by relaunching as a posh West End-style place serving bottled beer and frittatas.

This leads to some textbook sitcom shenanigans – the sight gag where the gang hang around outside a rival pub, wondering how rough it can really be, is older than some of the characters – but it’s expertly done, as is the subplot where Isa tries to find out who’s organising her surprise birthday party. She’s rumbled it every year so far…
