Review

There must be something in the water. It's odd that this comedy - about a widow (Alison Steadman) whose path to new love is blocked by her tiresome family - materialised in the same week that Mum returned on BBC2, with Lesley Manville and much the same premise.

Then there's Two Doors Down, which also has a sensible, long-suffering matriarch, surrounded by twits, and is also running on BBC2. Maybe someone has noticed that women in their 60s consume more TV than 20-somethings?

Either way, the plot here progresses as we meet more family members, including a self-centred sister for self-centred twerp Roger (Jason Watkins). The latter is in the garden shed playing with Airfix when Phil (John Cleese) pays him a call.
