All the King's Men

All the King's Men

An elegaic, haunting film about the fate of a company of soldiers from the Norfolk Regiment who crossed the Sulva Plain in Gallipoli in 1915 – and disappeared into mythology. They were all workers on the royal family’s Sandringham estate and were led by Captain Frank Beck, who was too old to fight but intent on following the men he’d trained.

This could so easily have been a star vehicle for David Jason (excellent as Beck), but it’s a superlative ensemble effort with Maggie Smith as Queen Alexandria and Patrick Malahide as a louche but ultimately heroic medical officer. A truly fine film.

Feature-length drama telling the mysterious and tragic story of Sandringham Company, the fifth battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. Headed by the honourable Frank Beck, the `ragbag' of King's servants were transformed into a magnificent fighting force who marched valiantly onto the battlegrounds of Gallipoli in the First World War, only to vanish, apparently into thin air, prompting the royal family to employ a special envoy to discover the truth. David Jason stars.
