Review

No caves this week. Instead Alice Roberts is in the great outdoors, tramping over the northern hemisphere where 18,000 years ago the earth was covered in ice, and mammoths, sabre-tooth cats and mastodons were among the megafauna roaming the frozen land.

The gradual extinction of these massive creatures is a perfect subject for younger viewers but popping in the occasional bit of CGI can’t make up for the desperately slow pace of this series. It’s like watching ice melt. However, what is incredible is seeing scientists on a Siberian island picking up woolly mammoth bones that are just lying around on the ground.

Summary

Alice Roberts sets out to discover why the creatures that dominated the planet 40,000 years ago died out as the world started to warm up and the end of the Ice Age neared. She examines how the woolly rhino was unable to adapt when the increase in snowfall prevented it eating enough grass, and learns that mastodons turned on one another. Last in the series.
