Micro Monsters with David Attenborough

Series 1 - Episode 1 Conflict

The title may sound as if our leading naturalist has made a range of children’s toys, but in reality he’s shining a light on bugs – arthropods to be precise. Though any kid would probably delight in having toys called pie-dish beetle, trapdoor spider, bombadier beetle and assassin bug.

Attenborough is aided by remarkable macroscopic photography in relating some of the fantastic behaviour of these creatures: the African antlion lava feeds constantly for three years before maturation, when it lives for just three weeks; the trapdoor spider builds a burrow in the rainforest floor and stays there for the entirety of its 20-year life.

David Attenborough employs the latest technologies to explore the violence, rivalries and deadly weaponry existing within the world of bugs. This first episode examines the survival tactics of its terrifying residents including killer ants, trap-setting spiders and beetles with the ability to shoot boiling chemicals at their enemies.
