Series 1 - Episode 2 Savannah

Sunday 2pm - 3pm Yesterday

Another beautifully filmed instalment introduces a vast flock of flamingos, warring hippos in super-slo-mo and an elephant calf chasing birds much like a toddler chases pigeons.

But be warned – there are sad sequences, too, one involving shoebills.
If you have a choice, try not to be reincarnated as a shoebill. Or at least,
make sure you’re not – and they are. They generally have two young, the older of which will bully and harry the younger one and hog all the food. But it’s more than playful rivalry. As the cameras watch we see a brutal family drama play out that may have younger siblings round the country wincing in sympathy.

David Attenborough continues his exploration of the continent in east Africa, which is a haven for life and supports a higher density of large mammals than anywhere else on Earth. From dense forests to snow-capped peaks, steamy swamps to endless savannah, it's also a land of unpredictable extremes, where creatures must adapt to survive. In Tanzania, a tiny lizard risks its life to eat flies from the face of a sleepy lion. The nesting habits of the 4ft shoebill are also captured on camera - the giant bird has two chicks, but due to sibling rivalry only one will survive. On the plains of Amboseli, a baby elephant is near to death in the drought, so its mother leaves the herd to stay with her offspring until the bitter end.
