One Born Every Minute

One Born Every Minute

Series 4 - Episode 2

Amid all the groaning, whimpering, screaming and pushing going on in St James’s maternity assessment centre (a sort of A&E for pregnant women
in Leeds), the midwives are having a hilarious conversation. They’re discussing a lotus birth, which is when the umbilical cord and placenta are left attached to the newborn baby (and carried around in a lavender bag) until they detach themselves naturally. “Ooh, nobody would be friends with you,” says one in disgust before snorting, “Babies have been born for millions of years without that carry-on.”

Sam, 24, and Claire, 20, both manage to have their first babies without “that carry-on”.

The stories of two strong women offering their daughters plenty of support during labour after unplanned pregnancies. Twenty-three-year-old Sam went off the rails as a teenager, running away from home and ending up sleeping rough, before meeting her partner Biaggio, and the couple are grateful to have Sam's mum by their side. Claire, 20, always knew she wanted her mother to be there in the delivery room, but deciding whether boyfriend Clint should be present wasn't as easy.
