Review

On the busy motorway of Saturday-night viewing, Boardwalk Empire ends up on the hard shoulder with a ratings flat tyre. But 90,000 or so viewers have stayed loyal and boy, do we get our money’s worth.

Tonight’s opening scene is typical BW: hard to describe in these refined pages, but suffice to say, it involves Gyp Rosetti — that paragon of Italian manhood — in the throes of a sexual misadventure outré even by the standards of the jazz age. Perhaps it’s his way of celebrating the blow he struck last week against Nucky’s operation — 11 men killed and the supply lines to New York cut.

It leads to a brilliant confrontation between Nucky and Rothstein. Menace is something this series does so well.

Summary

Gyp Rosetti's stronghold in Tabor Heights is preventing Arnold Rothstein from receiving his liquor shipments in New York, so he heads to Atlantic City to talk things over with Nucky. As the situation escalates, Rothstein proceeds to send an unequivocal message to his rival. Nucky uses his influence to find Billie a new dance partner with star quality in the hope of reviving her faltering show, but he comes unstuck when Margaret finds out about his affair. Meanwhile in Chicago, Van Alden worries that his past as a prohibition agent will catch up with him and goes to extreme lengths to ensure his previous life remains a secret.
