Review

It would have been hard to maintain the expanse, and expense, of the opening two-parter. So instead, occasional Merlin writer Howard Overman gives us a spooky slow-burner.

While out hunting, King Arthur and his long-suffering servant see villagers about to torch a suspected sorceress. When the pair rescue the old woman, she gives Arthur the means to summon the spirit world.

Despite warnings from Gaius, the king gives in to temptation: his father Uther (Anthony Head) is soon back, large as afterlife, but it’s far from the emotional reunion Arthur was expecting...

Those hoping to see how slippery Mordred is shaping up as a Knight of the Round Table will have to wait a while, but this week’s tale delivers jittery thrills and some cute comic touches to temper the scares.

And fears that Merlin’s hex factor would be trounced by The X Factor were dispelled by a solid six million tuning in for the first story. Now that’s magic.

Summary

A stranger gives Arthur the power to summon the dead, so he seizes the chance to speak to the person he misses most - his father, Uther Pendragon. But the young king's decision comes at a terrible price, for the spirit world is a dangerous place, leaving Merlin fighting against the odds to put right the mistake before Camelot is destroyed. Anthony Head guest stars, with Colin Morgan and Bradley James.
