Review

“In all my years as a bank manager I’ve never seen such slapdash methods,” says a bamboozled Mainwaring in a story set largely in civvy street. Jones is the insolvent old soldier in question, and a visit to his butcher’s shop reveals all manner of sloppy book-keeping. At the heart of the problem is an outstanding £50 in a plotline that resembles the song There’s a Hole in My Bucket.

It’s a leisurely caper that allows time for many small delights, including Wilson’s sunny description of his walk to work (“I wish I could afford to be sentimental,” replies Mainwaring), a brisk bit of hat slapstick plus a richly deserved comeuppance. And look at that patched-up office door in the bank – a nice bit of continuity from an earlier episode there.

Summary

Captain Mainwaring is alarmed to discover the extent of Corporal Jones's cash-flow crisis and takes drastic measures to help the butcher get back on his feet. Classic comedy first shown in 1975, starring Arthur Lowe and Clive Dunn.
