We might complain about the unseasonable weather that’s shaped our summer so far but, as this jaunt round the galaxy shows, it’s nothing compared with the ferocious storms that ravage our planetary neighbours.

From dust clouds that encompass the surface of Mars to lightning storms ten times the size of those on Earth, the programme takes us on a journey of solar-system one- upmanship where each planet throws up an increasingly “mega”, “super” or “cosmic” brand of weather for the narrator to hurl superlatives at.


The causes of galactic `megastorms', which have winds that move six times the speed of sound and lightning that stretches for thousands of miles, and whether they can create life.
