You might quibble about ascribing human motives to animal activities in a feature-length film imagining the life of a young king penguin returning home after three years at sea to find a mate. But this is written and narrated by David Attenborough, before whom all such criticism shrivels.

And it is beautiful: an intrepid crew spent five months on South Georgia with a cumbersome 3D camera (the 3D version was shown at New Year), struggling with bad weather and treacherous terrain. But even in 2D, penguins on land and underwater are irresistibly photogenic…


Documentary exploring the lives of king penguins, filmed on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia over five months. The programme imagines what one penguin's life would be, following it during the challenging, awkward time between adolescence and adulthood. Presented by David Attenborough.
