Review

Anyone who dismisses Agatha Christie as a cosy and safe writer should watch this memorable 1985 BBC adaptation of A Pocketful of Rye starring Joan Hickson.

Taking the innocent nursery rhyme as her launch point, the Queen of Crime goes on to weave a rather vicious web, with one disturbing murder seeing a character hung out on a washing line, a peg attached sadistically to their nose. A bucolic, whimsical whodunnit this most certainly isn’t.

The guest cast add to the sense of menace, too, with Peter Davison, Timothy West and Stacy (Keep It in the Family) Dorning all playing members of an upper-class family who appear to be being targeted by a ruthless killer.
