The Guest Wing

Series 1 - Episode 1

Gawp freely at the aristocracy with this arch fly-on-the-wall series, which visits stately homes that admit the hoi polloi for weddings and Sunday-afternoon nosings. It’s concerned less with the mechanics of hospitality than with the rattly old toffs who own the houses and constantly threaten to derail their own businesses.

At Maunsel House in Somerset, Ben the baronet is mothered by his army of young female staff, whose priority is to keep him away from the guests; at Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, the man in charge is sonnet-quoting, hand-clasping
Sir Humphrey, who thinks he’s just the same as his visitors. He isn’t.

Documentary following stately home owners who hire out their estates to earn extra income, and the clients who pay to use their properties for functions including stag parties, weddings and hunting trips. The programme explores how the reality of life in Britain's grand houses is often less glamorous than it appears, as proprietors struggle to maintain crumbling buildings and pay utility bills, and examines the modern-day divide between domestic staff and their employers. Featuring life at Chillingham Castle, Maunsel House, Carlton Towers and Muncaster Castle.
