Review

What could be more festive? C5 takes over TV’s oddest Christmas tradition: footage of large men competing to lift, shift and toss increasingly terrifying weights. Paul Dickenson is still your commentator and the excellent James Richardson is a rather underused presenter as, over an endurance-sapping ten episodes, we make our way to the final in North Carolina. Here's a tip: almost all the big contenders are in this first qualifying round, held in Istanbul.

Britain's best hope is affable Cheltenham outhouse Laurence Shahlaei. The glamour contestant is charismatic 6ft 8in American Brian Shaw. But the man to beat is Lithuanian meatball with legs, Zydrunas Savickas. Strength competitions give us all hope by being dominated by older contestants: Savickas is 36.

Summary

James Richardson and Caroline Pearce present action from the first qualifying heat in Istanbul. Lithuanian Zydrunas Savickas, champion for the past two years, is among the competitors in this heat, looking to qualify for the finals, which take place in the grounds of Wingate University in North Carolina.
