Review

Glorious dialogue writing, sex, and a good old-fashioned garroting scene: this episode of Boardwalk has something for everyone. It feels like an episode assembled by committee (unusually, three writers are credited), but a committee of brilliant creative minds who turn
a rambling, episodic plot made up of unrelated elements into something very, very good.

There’s a memorable encounter between good-time gangster Nucky (Steve Buscemi) and fervid fruit-loop Agent Van Alden (Michael Shannon), who is in a spot of bother with his mistress-and-baby situation. “I don’t judge people, I help them,” beams Nucky, relishing the moment. What he doesn’t know, and we do, is that Jimmy and his new-found friends have taken a decision to step up the turf war – and make it personal.

Meanwhile, we learn more about Margaret’s past as she visits her long-lost brother and sisters in Brooklyn. Cue a classic in the genre of “crowded period street scene”.

Summary

Margaret travels to Brooklyn for a difficult reunion with the family she left behind in Ireland, while Jimmy faces a decision that could shape the future of Atlantic City. The arrival of Daugherty's new federal prosecutor leaves Van Alden weighing his options, a despairing Lucy turns to an old friend for support, and Nucky sets about promoting heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey's next fight.
