Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World

Series 1 - Episode 1

A career as a climate activist wasn’t something Greta Thunberg envisaged for herself as a child. More likely was a job as a scientist “in a lab and not seeing the daylight”. Father Svante also never dreamt he’d be required to chaperone her on a crusade around the world. “You probably wish I’d picked up ballet dancing?” Greta asks her dad at one point in the persuasive opening hour of this three-part mission statement, to which Svante replies, with a wry smile, “I do”.

Yet in the space of a couple of years, Greta has gone from being a solo protestor outside the Swedish parliament to a global phenomenon who has her every utterance reported. But despite finding the media glare overwhelming, she refuses to give up. We join her in a pre-Covid 2019, where the journey to a UN climate change conference in Spain turns out to be unexpectedly dramatic.

Documentary following the climate activist over the course of 2019 and 2020, as she travels the world exploring the science of global warming and challenging world leaders to take action on the growing crisis. The programme follows the impact of Covid-19 on her campaign, and the challenges of persuading a world living through one crisis to face up to the possibility of another on the horizon. In the first programme, Greta travels through North America on her way to a UN climate conference in Chile.
