The US Masters is the only leg of the career Grand Slam that Rory McIlroy needs to complete. You could get good odds on him winning it in 2021, mind. The most recent of McIlroy’s four Major titles came in 2014, and a long fallow period that started in late 2019 led the Northern Irishman to bring a new coach — Pete Cowen — into his team last month, as he sought to reduce the speed of a swing that he had previously felt needed speeding up in the interests of hitting the ball further.

Thanks to Covid, it’s only five months since the 2020 Masters took place, which might increase Dustin Johnson’s chances of becoming only the fourth player in the tournament’s 87-year history to successfully defend the coveted Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club.

Summary

Coverage of the first day of the tournament, taking place at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia. Dustin Johnson will be looking to defend the title he won back in November after the coronavirus pandemic pushed the tournament back from April.
