Review

This mesmerising 90-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy was initially intended for the West End stage, but the summer of 2020 and Government guidelines rendered live audiences a distant reality. Instead, the production approached the performance with startling originality – using the empty National Theatre as a studio to create this stunning hybrid of theatre and film.

Josh O’Connor (The Crown) as Romeo and Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, Judy) as Juliet have great chemistry and bring a seductive tenderness to the renowned first-meet and balcony scenes. It’s a brilliant nod towards the malleability of the arts and the evolution of culture – and the performances are so visceral it makes you feel as though you’re sitting in a swarming theatre.
