Series 4 - Episode 3 The Wicked Day

Review

It’s party time in Camelot, with fire-eaters, stilt-walkers, jesters and all kinds of medieval high jinks. But rent-a-rotter Phil Davis is out to spoil the Prince’s birthday. He plays a flint-eyed assassin called, rather splendidly, the Gleeman, but who could have sent him? Not Queen of Scowl Morgana, as you might expect…

It’s another dark episode, and one that opens a new chapter for the series. But there are little nuggets of levity, as Merlin does his gurning, old-man act in a bid to put things right.

But fair play to the writer (Misfits creator Howard Overman), whose story spells out that there aren’t always quick fixes and easy answers – doubtless a constant temptation in a family show about magic. And the decision to move things on can only be a healthy one, helping to keep Merlin’s five million viewers glued.

Summary

Camelot is buzzing in anticipation of Arthur's birthday celebrations, but the prince's old adversary Odin is determined this is a party the people will never forget, for among the carnival performers is an assassin ready to strike. When the hired killer makes his move, Merlin is left in an impossible dilemma - to put things right he would have to reveal the secret of his magic. Phil Davis (Whitechapel) guest stars in the fantasy drama, with Colin Morgan and Bradley James.
