The Great British Dig: History in Your Back Garden

Lenton, Nottingham

Series 1 - Episode 3 Lenton, Nottingham

Priory Street, Friar Street, Nazareth Road, Old Church Street… the archaeologists have arrived in Lenton, Nottingham, and it’s no surprise what they’re looking for. It’s Lenton Priory, a vast medieval building established by one of William the Conqueror’s best pals, but destroyed after the Dissolution under Henry VIII 400 years later.

So what can they find in the gardens of enthused local residents, many of whom are keen to get stuck in. They’re going to have to dig quite far down – which, for one chap, might mean an-noying the neighbours as heavy machinery is brought in to undertake core sampling. There are bits of pottery, assorted teeth and bones, and an unassuming heap of rubble leads to an excit-ing discovery.

Hugh Dennis and the team of expert archaeologists unearth William the Conqueror's lost Priory hidden beneath the neighbourhood lawns of Lenton in Nottingham.
