Review

Much like ITV’s Long Lost Family, Stacey Dooley’s new series attempts to track down people’s living relatives. But it’s not restricted to adopted children. Instead it uses the DNA database to piece together puzzles about ancestry and vital health information too.

For instance Bill, now 75, grew up without knowing his father, an African American GI stationed over here during the war. Richard, 53, was shocked to be told the man he had called dad might not be his biological father. Charlie and Rob were devastated to hear that their baby may have inherited the gene that caused Charlie’s father to develop Huntington’s disease.

It’s an interesting twist that taps into our fascination with our past. And other people’s pasts as well, of course. Geneticist Turi King does a good job dragging out the reveal and there are some truly unexpected (as well as occasionally disappointing) results. It’s less emotional than LLF although there’s one story that might bring tears to your eyes.

Summary

Stacey Dooley helps people answer life-changing questions by examining their DNA. In the first episode, she comes to the aid of Richard, who wants to learn if a man claiming to be his biological father is the genuine article, and Charlie, who wants to know what her chances are of contracting the same terminal illness as her father.
