Review

Being such a nice, homely, calm sort of activity, baking doesn’t naturally lend itself to tension or jeopardy - even in a competition.

But as Sacher tortes nearly tumble to the ground, millefeuilles gently deconstruct on the plate and a maverick icing bag disgorges its contents, giving us “the great piping disaster of 2011”, your heart will be in your mouth. “It’s all about flavour, consistency and presentation,” says Paul Hollywood, although it can’t help if you burn your hazelnuts and produce a filling he describes as “revolting” (before Mary Berry pronounces it “absolutely lovely”).

At the end a winner has to be found, although all three finalists are so good it’s almost impossible to choose. But what of us GBBO fanatics, left with a gaping hole
to fill.

Summary

The remaining three hopefuls compete in the 2011 final, which sees them cooking for a street party attended by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, as well as friends, family and former Bake Off contestants. Their offerings include mille-feuille, mini Victoria sponges, and miniature strawberry and rhubarb cheesecakes. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
