Review

Last week in Radio Times Justin Webb waxed nostalgic about the British and railways, observing, “We invented trains in the UK and we still love them.” If his words happened to strike a chord, then you may want to climb aboard Yesterday’s stopping service, as the channel gives over its schedules to a slew of rail-related series.

All have proved popular on other channels, of course: today there’s BBC2’s abiding Great British Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo and Channel 5’s absorbing Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railways. Tomorrow they’re joined by Locomotion: Dan Snow's History of Railways.

Summary

Michael Portillo ends his journey through the west of England and south Wales by exploring the connection between the Victorian railway and Port Talbot's steelworks. He then follows the trail of 19th-century waterfall hunters in Neath, and reveals Milford Haven's whaling past.
