Review

Don’t come to this expecting squirrel-sized sweetness and furry fun; dear me, no. It’s a one-off addition to the Attenborough-narrated Dynasties series, following a family of Meerkats in the salt pans of Botswana… and it’s brutal.

There are cute moments, of course, with daffy meerkat pups tumbling and squeaking like furry little buffoons. But mostly this is about scraping a lean existence in a harsh landscape with the kind of family politics you’d expect from a Scorsese movie. One death scene will haunt me all Christmas.

The scenery of the Makgadikgadi flats is extraordinary, with grass hillocks scattered amid a sea of salt. Queen of the group we’re following is a female called Maghogho, who must steer her family through the perils of sandstorms, rival clans and snakes. Boy, it’s a tough life, and a drought doesn’t help.

Summary

A young meerkat queen lives in the harsh beauty of the Madgadikgadi salt pans. If her new pups are to survive, she must unite her family in the face of rivals, predators and immense dust storms. Narrated by David Attenborough.
