Jane Danson has brought great conviction to this storyline, with its sad echoes of the Charlie Gard news story of 2017. Her performance as harried mum Leanne, fighting with every last ounce of her strength against the hospital’s diagnosis that her son should be allowed to die, has been a powerfully moving mixture of love, rage, stubbornness and desperation. The story itself has had a few unnecessarily melodramatic spikes (I’m not sure we needed Leanne coming on to Steve, for instance), but I’d definitely recommend stockpiling tissues as we reach its tragic conclusion.

It has, of course, been a rough year as far as child deaths in our soaps are concerned. First, we had Sharon’s son Dennis drowning in Walford back in February, and now we have little Oliver set to pass away in Weatherfield. And while grief becomes the immediate next chapter of these dramas, I can’t help but fret a little about the long-term repercussions for both Corrie and EastEnders. Surely a key responsibility on the part of producers is to build the next generation of family members?

Leanne faces the toughest day of her life, a visit from Jenny's stepdaughter provides a welcome distraction, and Tim and Alya search Geoff's home while he's out.
