Review

Not every game show is improved by replacing Joe Public contestants with celebrities, but this one is. When you’ve got people who are confident and rich enough to take the arch mockery of host Richard Ayoade, he can properly let rip.

Don’t miss the pre-game interviews, where Ayoade pretends not to know what either wellness (as advocated by former Pussycat Doll Kimberley Wyatt) or Love Island (as previously participated in by Chris Hughes) are, mocks Matt Edmondson’s membership of the Magic Circle in front of Debbie McGee, and confronts Michael Owen about his famous aversion to the entire concept of films. Hughes gets the worst of it: his extended conversation with the host before a game in the Futuristic Zone descends into absurdist comedy, and then when the door closes and he’s asked to traverse a room via a method based on kids’ adventure playgrounds, he suffers one of the funniest failures in Crystal Maze history. Ayaode takes full advantage.

Summary

Radio DJ and TV presenter Matt Edmondson, showbiz legend Debbie McGee, singer and dancer Kimberly Wyatt, retired footballer Michael Owen and reality TV star Chris Hughes take on everything the maze throws at them. One particularly wobbly challenge leaves the celebrities dumbfounded and in fits of hysterics, but will it derail the entire outing? Richard Ayoade is the man in charge.
