Review

A new David Hare thriller lands with a satisfying thud, like a hefty, glossy hardback. His last for television was Collateral in 2018 (repeated on BBC4 from tonight), where he veered into police procedural. Now he’s back in his more natural habitat of politics and intrigue, with the parable of Peter Laurence, a Conservative cabinet minister with a popular touch and a self-made fortune.

All you really need to know is that Hugh Laurie plays Peter, and plays him beautifully, as a steely-eyed operator with skeletons cluttering his every cupboard. At the start, he emerges from court after winning a libel trial, but the smooth cloth of his career is fraying at the edges, and the icy Prime Minister (Helen McCrory) has him in her sights.

What follows is slick, involving and nicely convoluted. At times you may find yourself wondering, “Hang on, would that ever happen?” but set such doubts aside and enjoy the ride.

Thriller by David Hare, starring Hugh Laurie and Helen McCrory.
