‘The football pyramid, the foundations of it are in bits,’ sighs a loyal female fan in this BBC3 documentary (previously available on iPlayer). Bury FC is – or was – one of the oldest clubs in the world, founded in 1885 and twice winners of the FA Cup. The Lancashire club had just won promotion to League One last year, when it was expelled by the EFL because of insolvency, with staff, players and creditors unpaid.

The programme does a good job of conveying the sense of communal trauma when a well-supported club collapses, but then charts the birth of a ‘phoenix club’ called Bury AFC designed to give the town something to cheer, but at a time when grassroots football is, at best, struggling.

Summary

A look at the attempts of a group of locals to bring football back to Bury after the local football club was expelled from the English Football League in August 2019. The film follows Chris Murray and his friends over the course of 12 months, getting behind-the-scenes access to the birth of a new football club and seeing what it really takes to make dreams a reality.
