Review

As with many episodes, Jodie Whittaker’s genealogy journey starts with a cherished family tale lovingly handed down through generations.

It’s about Jodie’s adored granny, Greta, and her middle name of “Verdun”. The story goes that it was bestowed on Greta in memory of her half-brother Walter, who died at the Battle of Verdun during the First World War.

Jodie’s delightful dad Adrian has actually started a file called Greta Verdun Whittaker in the quest to find out more. Though, “Can I say there’s bugger-all in it?” he tells his daughter cheerfully. As always with research into family folklore, things aren’t quite what they seem.
But Jodie Whittaker’s real gasp moments come as she goes on to explore her mum Yvonne’s side of the family, and the wealthy Yorkshire mine-owning brothers who carried on regardless during the miners’ strike of 1921.

As she assesses the consequences, Whittaker becomes very uncomfortable.

Summary

The genealogy documentary follows more celebrities as they trace their family trees to uncover facts about their heritage. First up is Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, who looks into a romantic story she has been told about how her paternal grandmother Greta came to be given the middle name of Verdun - which was a First World War battle. On her mother's side, Jodie gets to the bottom of how her great-great-grandfather worked his way up from child labourer in a Yorkshire coal mine to becoming the owner of one.
