Contributing to this profile of the American broadcaster Alex Jones, British author Jon Ronson calls him “the most… spiralling person I’ve ever met”. An emotionally volatile monologuist, Jones was a fringe figure until the confluence of 9/11 and the internet’s new power to build communities meant conspiracy theorists could band together and wield influence. Having learned to turn fear and hatred into a lucrative commodity, Jones grew in stature and saw his trademark move of confidently and repeatedly making wild statements with no supporting evidence enter the political mainstream.

Then in 2016, Donald Trump was elected President of the USA. At that point, things really got weird.
