The Vote

Series 1 - Episode 1

Documentaries without dramatic reconstructions or a presenter striding through exotic locations can be dry and soporific, but this history of the American women’s suffrage campaign is anything but. Fabulous photographs, fascinating newspaper clippings and the heroes of many such factual films, vivid political cartoons, tell a story that resonates with a lot of subsequent social struggles.

As well as deciding physically how far to take their protest, US suffragettes were unsure whether to align themselves with the civil rights movement, or to be associated with the campaign for prohibition. Even when they got all that right, they had fearsome forces of social conservatism to overcome. It’s a stirring, instructive story that concludes tomorrow.

Part one of two. The campaign waged by American women for the right to vote, a cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of suffrage in US history.
