Review

Over 35,000 years ago, nomadic hunter-gatherers in the south-west of France drew the world around them on the only canvas they had available: the walls of caves. Discovered in 1994, the caves at Chauvet are extraordinary, filled with skilfully rendered, vibrant images of horses, rhinos, lions and more. And there are stories being told here, too.

This gorgeously filmed survey of ancient wall painting also features the frescoes that adorn the Roman villas of Pompeii, which record the cultural aspirations of their owners. And the camera swings restlessly around the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, as if trying to capture in one go the sheer wonder of Giotto’s fresco cycle of the life of the saint.
