Review

The title is ironic. This Storyville film exposes the persecution of LGBTQ people in the Russian republic, who have been detained in large numbers since 2017, tortured and often killed, allegedly on the orders of the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. With harrowing, often nauseating testimony and the incredibly clever, digital alteration of faces, it shows how a “lucky” few have been smuggled out and given shelter by the Russian LGBT Network, with the aim of flying them to safety in Canada.
For complacent westerners still looking for reasons to be proud after Pride month, watch the bravery of “Grisha”, 30, who decides to go public in a Moscow court about the brutality he endured.
