Episode 3: Kids' Den and Jet Engine

Summary

Architect George Clarke delves into the world of small builds, meeting people taking tiny, unpromising spaces and creating places to live, work and play, demonstrating how big dreams can be achieved in small and affordable places. In the third episode, George meets a couple crafting a magical den for their toddler with a helping hand from a grandparent, while an aircraft technician turns a jet engine's housing into a unique camper. Elsewhere in Chile, George discovers some lip-smacking designs in a winery

Review

There are those who reckon you could knock the last word off the title and this show would be better named. But fine and dandy as George Clarke is, I admire his researchers more, for the joyously mad projects they find. Into that category this week flies a decommissioned VC-10 jet.

Former RAF man Steve wants to turn it into a caravan. Not the whole thing, you understand, that would be too easy: just the engine. He believes he can turn the engine casing into a four-berth caravan pod, though it’s about the size of a tanning bed, so nobody will be able to stand up. ‘We might end up with a few bad backs,’ he acknowledges, but presses on.

Also on George’s radar, a Chilean winery that looks like a burst grape and a brilliant Hobbit House built from old logs.
