Review

Bram Stoker’s classic horror story has been adapted many times but never with this much athleticism and sensuality. Choreographed and directed by David Nixon, this recent Northern Ballet production transforms the Leeds Playhouse into a vault of dense black, iridescent reds and carnal lust.

It licks through the plot with the thirst of a vampire and has a score to die (and rise from the dead) for by Schnittke, Rachmaninov and Michael Daugherty. Among dozens of standout moments, the love scene between Dracula and an eager Mina to Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel is mesmerisingly graceful. Javier Torres brings Latin virility to the Count. Eat your heart out, Claes Bang.
