Series 2 - Episode 4 France - La Ligne de Cevenne

A passenger on her way to work sums up the lush calm of La Ligne des Cévennes in France as she gazes out at the beauty beyond: “I like to take the train because I can dream.”

It certainly is the most beautiful line, ambling from Nîmes to the stunning mountaintop eyrie of Puy de Dôme. It’s largely a small rural route beloved of tourists and locals, though its fortunes have been mixed down the years when part of the area was hit hard by the closure of its coal mines.

But there are pretty villages along the way served by tiny stations, including one run solely by its smart and proud stationmaster.

The 200-mile Ligne de Cévennes, which travels northwards through the Massif Central to France's volcanic heart - Clermont Ferrand and the spectacular Puy De Dome. The route takes travellers across three incredible historic viaducts, plunges deep underground to explore the area's hidden wildlife and traverses through several impressive valleys. The route winds through one of the world's most spectacular national parks, before reaching its final destination, a collection of 80 dormant volcanoes. Narrated by Bill Nighy.
