Summary
A rejuvenated Stephen heads back to the John Barleycorn, just as Andrew is starting to feel restricted and weighed down by the mundanities of being a pub landlord.
A rejuvenated Stephen heads back to the John Barleycorn, just as Andrew is starting to feel restricted and weighed down by the mundanities of being a pub landlord.
The plot in this pleasantly dark-edged sitcom has taken a turn. Stephen and Alison (David Mitchell and Olivia Poulet) are planning to torment Andrew (Robert Webb) via his long-lost birth mother. “He’s the devil,” insists Alison, by way of justification. But Stephen has his doubts.
The trouble is, Stephen is funniest when he’s a resentful misanthrope who hates himself and everyone else, not when he suddenly starts being nice. And you can’t help wishing Robert Webb had more scope for comedy as Andrew, who has also become a bit… nice.
Luckily, this final episode suggests a dramatic new tack for future series – and also engineers a chillingly good piece of black comedy about, of all things, cancer.
