Review

They’re the superstars of ITV teatime quizzing, but are Anne Hegerty, Mark Labbett and Shaun Wallace the intellectual champs of the entire animal kingdom? Well, on the basis of this globe-trotting experiment, it seems that primates might make for decent Chasers. If they were able to answer questions via touchscreens and lexigrams, that is.

As our trio of human trivia titans discover while in America, there are some very smart bonobos and chimpanzees out there. But while the test results are genuinely surprising, gasps should be saved for the section filmed in sunny Florida, which sees Mark emerge Daniel Craig-style from the waves and Shaun wearing some frankly obscene shorts.

Summary

Anne Hegerty, Mark Labbett and Shaun Wallace - three of the biggest brains of the quizzing world - travel the world to uncover the cognitive abilities of animals, children and artificial intelligence. They start out in the USA, where they pit their wits against Kanzi, a bonobo ape who is able to communicate with humans using a series of pictures and symbols - and is also thought to be one of the first apes to show an understanding of spoken English. They also meet a chimpanzee memory wizard, a 25-year-old orang-utan that enjoys playing video games and that well-known genius of the ocean, the dolphin.
