Review

The team behind The Durrells and its star Keeley Hawes reconvene for a blackly comic drama about a newly widowed woman uncovering her partner’s secrets. But hold on: isn’t bereavement a tough topic if you want to keep things light? Not at all: After Life (Netflix) and The Other One (BBC1) ploughed similar furrows, and both found good jokes in the way grief clears the decks and frees people to say the unsayable.

Certainly, Alice (Hawes) has no time for niceties when her partner Harry falls down the un-banistered stairs of their brand new “smart” house – on the very night they move in. She bats off the police, clashes with her parents (played by Joanna Lumley and Nigel Havers) and falls foul of a tetchy mortician, though we sense he may become an ally.

Meanwhile, there’s one issue even more pressing than arranging the funeral: what on earth did Harry, a builder and property developer, do with all their money?

Summary

For Alice, Harry and their daughter, Charlotte, moving into their new home should have been a dream come true. But it turns into a nightmare when Alice discovers Harry dead at the bottom of the stairs in the property he designed. Drama, starring Keeley Hawes, Gemma Jones and Kenneth Cranham.
