Death in Paradise

Series 10 - Episode 2

The main criticism levelled at Death in Paradise is that each story always ends with black subordinate detectives being left astounded by the sleuthing insights of their white superior officer. But while we’re still waiting for Florence and JP to actually crack a case, it is refreshing to see Neville portrayed as this bumbling Brit abroad with laughably parochial tastes – tonight, the mere thought of cooking crabs instead his default chicken and chips gives him the shivers. And I also get the impression that the team’s search for a new recruit may result in more savviness in the lower ranks.

Onto the mystery, then, and it’s one that appears to have been solved within the first ten minutes as a quick confession is made following the death of an archaeologist. But all is not as it first seems and the suspects (who include Call the Midwife’s Bryony Hannah and Our Girl’s Luke Pasqualino) are soon sharing nervous glances and wiping sweat from their brows as the police start probing their backgrounds.

An archaeologist is poisoned during a dig, and with only two suspects and a quick confession, it looks like this is going to be an open-and-shut case. However, it turns out the archaeologists were not alone - and the team realise they have little to no evidence. Meanwhile, Neville and Florence realise they might get along better than they originally thought, although the DI's attempts to embrace island life do not find favour with the Commissioner.
