Review

How mean are Mary Berry, Angela Hartnett and Chris Bavin? The three finalists arrive in the kitchen clutching their “ultimate” recipe, only to be told that the judges are changing the format. They’re starting with the rustle-up challenge, followed by the eliminator round – after which one of them will be leaving. The cooks’ confidence sinks faster than you can say deflated soufflé.

There have been extreme highs and lows throughout the competition: a sugar-free children’s cake made with avocado wasn’t a success, while duck ragu pasta with a sprinkling of crackling was a massive hit. And, of course, food has fallen on the floor, joyful tears have been shed and hopes have been dashed.

The final challenge is to prepare three mouth-watering courses for a special dinner party. The last two standing are so evenly matched, it leaves the judges with the almost impossible task of picking a winner. “Shall we toss a coin?” asks Bavin, semi-seriously.

Summary

Claudia Winkleman presents the final, which sees the last three contestants rising to the challenge. To shake things up, however, the judges present their tasks in a different order to normal. Chris Bavin's `rustle up' comes first, after which it's on to another of Angela Hartnett's tricky recipes in the eliminator. Sadly, one of the hopefuls will then receive their marching orders, leaving the other two to take on Mary Berry's challenge - a full three-course meal which will secure one of them the title. Last in the series.
