Episode 2: Episode 2

Summary

Emily learns that Les Vegas is alive and well, and has faked his own death for a hefty life insurance payout. What's worse, she finds herself handcuffed to her father and hiding from police and recent love-interest Nathan, who are pounding down the door and investigating a disturbance. Comedy drama, starring Natalie Dew, David Walliams, Sophie Thompson and Sanjeev Bhaskar

Review

After discovering her estranged father, king of the pier Les Vegas (Sanjeev Bhaskar), has faked his own death, Emily must overcome her sense of betrayal to deliver the eulogy at his beachside memorial — a classic sitcom set-piece set to the sound of Robbie Williams’s Angels.

For all its tonal lurches, there’s no denying Sandylands, which first aired in 2020 on Gold, captures the sheer weirdness of the seaside resort, with Craig Parkinson’s vainglorious DJ the pick of the caricatures and Bhaskar finding pathos in the swirling silliness. Hugh Bonneville’s long-trailed arrival, his professional capacity revealed at the last moment, sets up next week’s finale very nicely.
