Prison

Series 2 - Episode 2

Review

This is a great series, skilfully filmed by Paddy Wivell, whose presence behind the camera and interactions with his subjects give it a distinct, unvarnished tone. All the more galling, then, that Channel 4 changed the running order of the series just as RT went to press, meaning we couldn’t watch this week’s episode.

In it, Wivell returns to HMP Foston Hall, a women’s prison where over half of the inmates are suffering from the effects of long-term emotional, physical or sexual abuse. In an attempt to tackle these issues, Foston’s regime has set up a prisoner-led therapy group. The leader is no-nonsense Sonia, who is inside for attempted murder and says, “Prison saved my life – it’s what you make it.”
